Lapses that are common with age

Taking longer to recall a name, misplacing glasses, forgetting why you walked into a room, or occasionally missing a monthly bill are all common and, on their own, not signs of disease[1]. They tend to come and go with sleep, stress and distraction, and the information usually comes back later.

Signs that need a medical visit

The National Institute on Aging lists warning signs that go beyond normal aging[2]:

  • Asking the same questions over and over
  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Trouble following directions or recipes
  • Increasing confusion about time, people or places
  • Difficulty managing money or medicines
  • Changes in mood or personality, or withdrawing from activities
  • Family or friends noticing changes you do not

Any of these, especially if they are getting worse, is a reason to book an appointment rather than buy a supplement.

Treatable causes worth ruling out

Many memory problems have causes that can be fixed: thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, depression, sleep apnea and other sleep problems, hearing loss, alcohol, and side effects of medicines such as some sleep aids, bladder drugs and antihistamines[1]. A doctor can check these with a history, a short cognitive test and basic blood work.

What an evaluation looks like

A first visit usually includes questions about the changes, a review of all medicines and supplements (bring the bottles, including any memory supplement), a brief memory and thinking test, a physical exam and blood tests. If needed, referral to a specialist and brain imaging follow. If Alzheimer's disease or another dementia is diagnosed, approved medicines and support services are available[3].

What helps long-term

The Lancet Commission links about 40% of dementia risk to modifiable factors, including hearing loss, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, smoking, diabetes and social isolation[4]. No over-the-counter supplement has been shown to prevent cognitive decline[5]. A memory supplement such as MindVault is, at best, an add-on for people whose lapses are normal; it is never a substitute for an evaluation when the signs above appear.

Questions on this topic

Should I try a supplement before seeing a doctor?

If any warning sign is present, see a doctor first. Treatable causes are common, and a supplement can delay finding them.

Will my doctor mind that I take a memory supplement?

Doctors need to know about every supplement you take, especially ones containing huperzine A or caffeine. Bring the bottle.
